Hailey and I know for a fact that you’ve been praying for Monochurch and for our family because God has done amazing things in the past month. Here’s the outline for this letter: I’d love to share with you a quick story, some big updates and some prayer requests.
I heard a great sermon on “desperate prayer” this past week. My family attended the church I grew up in, Compassion Christian in Savannah, Georgia. My dad was preaching on the story of King Hezekiah from 2 Kings 18 and 19. You probably remember the story. Hezekiah has been the King of Israel for 14 years and the King of Assyria is coming after him hard. Assyria has conquered all of the other fortified cities of Judah and now they are coming for Jerusalem. The Assyrian king’s field commander sends Hezekiah a letter saying if they don’t surrender in the next 24 hours, they are going to kill them all.
Hezekiah is rightfully scared. So he takes that letter, goes to the temple, lays it out before the Lord, and prays a prayer of desperation. His prayer begins with “You are God alone” and ends with “So now, O LORD our God, save us, please, from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that you, O LORD, are God alone.”
He basically says to God. You are the ONLY person in the universe who can help us. There is no plan B. There is no other way. Either you show up and do a miracle–or WE ALL DIE.
I was so inspired by that story of desperate prayer. Hailey and I realized that though we aren’t being threatened with death by the king of Assyria, we have found ourselves praying in a similar way. As far as His church plant is concerned, there is no plan B. Either God shows up and does a miracle or it won’t happen. So let’s use Hezekiah’s prayer process as we continue this journey.
